News and Updates
National Grid Gas Transmission has become National Gas
I am delighted to share that National Grid Gas Transmission has become National Gas – which comprises National Gas Transmission and National Gas Metering.
It follows the completion of the sale by National Grid plc of a 60% equity interest in the business to a consortium comprised of Macquarie Asset Management, a global asset manager and the world’s largest infrastructure manager, and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI), one of Canada’s largest institutional investors.
National Gas Transmission is the owner and system operator of the National Transmission System (NTS) in the UK – a 7,600km network of high-pressure pipelines, connecting upstream gas to large industry, gas storage facilities, power stations, and the Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs) that serve millions of consumers. Our National Gas Metering arm is the largest asset manager of residential, industrial, and commercial gas meters in Great Britain – managing a portfolio of more than 7 million meters. All these put National Gas at the heart of the UK economy and the transition to a net zero future. For more information about us, our team and to follow updates, please visit our new website at www.nationalgas.com.
Looking to the future, our vision includes the development of a hydrogen backbone that continues to connect all critical parts of the country. It will be integrated with carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) and hydrogen production sites across Great Britain. Offshore wind will fit perfectly with this vision, with renewable electricity being used at times of low demand, to produce green hydrogen which can also be stored to provide vital flexibility.
We are pleased that Macquarie and BCI back our vision for the future. They stated that “the country must have a next-generation transmission backbone to power homes and businesses with renewable energy.” We are looking forward to working with all our stakeholders to ensure that the NTS is ready for the net zero transition, supporting the expansion of hydrogen’s role in the energy mix and delivering continued energy security.
Please be reassured that whilst our shareholders have changed, we are just as committed to working closely with you to deliver your needs. Your relationships and contacts will stay the same and existing email addresses will continue to work as we transition over to the new domain.

Viewing & Filtering UMM's
After recent trials the GB REMIT portal has some new added features around viewing & filtering UMMs. Users are now able to filter UMMs more specifically and this can be done by using any of the fields that are available in the new ACER Schema. Also users can view by a Tabular View or download via a CSV file.
These improvements were made at the request of the industry and are live as of 23.8.17
As always contact us at remit@nationalgas.com with your views.
UMM Uploading by XML
Following requests from users of the National Grid Remit site to allow XML loading of Urgent Market Message (UMM), today the new process for uploading UMM, via XML has gone live. Some members of the community responded to our request to test, and this passed. Thank you to those who did test and helped to get to this stage.
This XML Load process will facilitate a second method of uploading UMM and does not replace the current option of manually uploading. The user Provider User Guide has been updated and this can be found in the the Useful Information section of the site. If you require any support through this new process, can you go to the "Contact" section of the site and complete the form and we will look into your query with the support of our providers.
Thank You.
